"'Unfortunately, it is very common for Chinese students who support democracy in China to face this kind of harassment and physical threats. There are students who jump on any opportunity to defend the CCP’s propaganda against any activism efforts by pro-democracy students. This has been going on for decades on dozens of college campuses. Fortunately, law enforcement took action in this case, but we must not forget that this is just one case of many. We must note that many of those threatened are not willing to fight back or seek assistance from law enforcement because their families are being held hostage back in China,' said Zhou Fengsuo."
Human Rights in China 中国人权
"HRIC reaffirms its support for Chinese human rights advocates facing persecution for their activism, even overseas, in light of the recent conviction of Chinese student Xiaolei Wu in the US for threatening a pro-democracy activist.
Our Executive Director, Fengsuo Zhou, knows too well the plight of student activists under threat for supporting democracy—harassment that's persisted for decades across campuses.
This incident, though addressed by law enforcement, highlights a broader issue: the need for stronger protection of free speech and support for pro-democracy students facing retaliation, often silenced by the fear for their families' safety in China.
We call on the global community and the United Nations to intensify focus on the challenges faced by Chinese rights defenders, as the climate for human rights continues to deteriorate."
