"Taiwan lost diplomatic recognition from the Pacific island nation of Nauru as Beijing intensified its efforts to isolate Taipei just days after Taiwanese voters elected a presidential candidate whom China condemns as a separatist.
Tien Chung-kwang, Taiwan's deputy foreign minister, accused Beijing of trying to diplomatically suffocate Taiwan. 'This is an act of retaliation against democracy, and a blatant provocation toward the international order,' he said, pointing to the timing of the announcement in the wake of the elections.
Beijing welcomed Nauru’s decision. 'China is willing to work with Nauru to open a new chapter in our bilateral relations on the basis of the "one China" principle,' Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said at a routine briefing."
